Caring For Your Old Dog


Once your dog becomes older it is time to take some precautionary steps to keep them healthy, happy and active. Having your veterinarian check your pet every year or more often, if necessary.

As in humans, keep your dog's weight within the right range or optimal. Dogs are overweight have a much more health problems such as joint problems, arthritis, diabetes, and liver or kidney damage. Reducing the amount of treats given to your pet. It is hard to resist their soulful eyes, but always remember that it is for their own good. You do not want to kill your pet to think you are being kind to them. Feeding your pet once a day or a smaller amount twice a day but remove the food if there is left. Like dogs of all ages, make sure there is always fresh, cool water available. Some of the older dogs have a problem getting into the water bowl so well to fetch water for them or place a bowl of water in a few different places so that they do not have to go far for a drink.

If possible take your dog for a short walk daily. This helps the dog's blood circulation and provide some new sights and smells to stimulate them and give you quality time to spend with your pet. He may be older but still curious.

You may need to switch from wet to dry food or canned food as your dog ages. Her teeth might not be able to handle the dry kibbles violence. Keeping your older dog and take him to the vet regularly to help keep your dog healthy and happy again.
